First Generation is about a South Asian family in transition. The secret love affair between Asha and Kevin becomes increasingly tense when her mother, who wants to marry her off in the traditional manner, exerts pressure on Asha. The father, on the other hand is more concerned about Asha’s education. He has lost all hope in his son Ajay, who has a history of getting in trouble within the family and with the outside world.

The father has invested all his trust in Asha until she reveals her secret affair, which leaves him feeling extremely betrayed. He is unable to control his rage. His violence and the constant persuasion by Kevin leaves Asha with no choice but to go her own separate way. Ajay is lost and confused in his enclosed world showing all signs of isolation...

A final tragic situation has a humbling effect on the family, which ironically brings them all together… briefly…

The film portrays not only the problems with gender roles and intergenerational conflicts, but also the travails of recent immigrants in North America. The tragedy of the young boy results from the woeful marginalization of youth caught between two cultures. Mr. Maisuria has handled this very strong and emotional issue with great sensitivity. I recommend this film with great enthusiasm.

I wanted to write and express something that I know about," explains Maisuria. "People around me continue to and are experiencing these kinds of conflicts. I took various situations and made the characters in this film deal with them, both individually and as a family.

First Generation is not your typical film. It is a deeply personal movie that accurately portrays an immigrant family’s dilemma of reconciling traditional values with the new. It doesn’t blame or judge but evokes the viewer to reflect as the story progresses, and make up their own minds at the end.

First Generation is a beautiful piece of work. Its textures are rich with the abrasiveness of intimate and personal experiences, bringing to mind the masterfully crafted works of such Realism films of Mike Leigh and Ken Loach; as well as Deepa Mehta and Mira Nair, auteurs whose brilliant early works Ishwar L. Maisuria has rivaled in scale and subject matter.

“Wonderful cinematography and ideas. This is a dominant theme in the Indian Diaspora experience – would love to see more exploration of this theme from the point of view of those first generation adults, how they handle life after their parents, how they blend into society and handle all the present demands of life.”

“Well researched, well done, required a lot of effort and hard work. I am glad the production was good and has quality. Keep it up.”

“The story content is very timely. It’s what is happening with many cultures in Vancouver and other North American cities, i.e. Italians, Asians, Greeks, as well as South Asians. There is no easy solution, but bringing awareness into the open is the first step. A wonderful film. Well done.”

“I thought the Mother character was a very convincing performance. The daughter was the slickest. The Father’s character brought out the tragic inevitability and the son’s torment was well done. Good luck with your venture.”

“It is hard to imagine that one person could undertake and accomplish a full feature film, independently, and that with a sensitive issue and message. Congratulations. Hope more is on the way. Best luck.”

“I really liked the story. I felt I learned something from watching the film. Great message. I especially liked the usage of music at key moments. The solo piano pieces were moving. Thank you.”

“The movie made me cry in parts, and that says a lot! This was a very important and prevalent issue, dealt with through intensity, honesty, and emotion. I felt the ending offered an excellent compromise. Hopefully, this will open up minds of people involved in similar situations. When a filmmaker can portray an issue as in this one, it shows great potential.”
